If you are building or renovating and deciding between Loxone and KNX, you will most likely encounter two opposing camps. One group will tell you that KNX is the only "serious" system because it is open and you will have the freedom to choose components from dozens of manufacturers. The other group will reply that Loxone is faster, cheaper and simply works. The truth, as usual, lies somewhere in between and depends largely on what you expect from a smart home.

In this article, we compare both systems from the perspective of a Czech customer in 2026. We are not neutral. We are a Loxone partner. However, with over 12 years in the industry, we have seen enough KNX projects to know when KNX is truly the better choice and when it is simply an expensive redundancy.

History: 30 years of KNX versus 15 years of Loxone

KNX It was established in 1999 by merging three older European standards (EIB, EHS and BatiBUS), whose roots go back to the late 80s. Since 2006, KNX has been the official international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3 and the European standard EN 50090. Behind the KNX Association stand over 500 manufacturers from around the world - Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric, Hager, Gira, Jung, Theben, MDT and dozens more. When you buy a KNX component today, you have the certainty that it will communicate with an installation twenty years old as well as one created in ten years' time.

Loxone It is younger. It was founded in 2009 by two Austrian engineers in the town of Kollerschlag and from the start pursued a different strategy: instead of an open standard, they created a closed ecosystem where everything: from the Miniserver via relay modules to switches and the Music Server, is made by one company. The reason: quality control and reliability. The disadvantage: if you do not like something, you cannot buy a third-party component.

This is a fundamental difference we will return to. KNX is standard, Loxone is product.

Different philosophies of both systems

KNX: Open standard, multi-vendor, slow evolution

The KNX bus is a two-wire, decentralised system, each component (switch, thermostat, relay) has its own processor and address. The system has no "brain"; logic is distributed across components. Programming is done in the ETS (Engineering Tool Software) application, which costs over 1 000 euros for a full licence, without it, you cannot do anything with KNX. Parametrisation is detailed but time-consuming. A simple change (adding a new scene, renaming a button) takes several times longer with KNX than with Loxone.

The advantage is freedom of choice. You can take the thermostat from Theben, buttons from Gira, dimmer from ABB, touch panel from Basalte. Each component works independently and after replacing the installer you are not dependent on a single company.

Loxone: proprietary ecosystem, central Miniserver, rapid iteration

Loxone is built around a central control unit (Miniserver or Miniserver Go), to which all peripherals connect via Loxone Tree (newer) or Loxone Link (older). Logic is programmed in the desktop application Loxone Config, which is free for certified partners. Configuration is visual and drag-and-drop, creating a scene that would take half an hour in ETS can be done in Loxone in 3 minutes.

The disadvantage is dependence on a single manufacturer. If Loxone were to go bankrupt tomorrow (which is extremely unlikely: the company is profitable and growing), your existing installation would continue to work, but you could no longer expect spare parts or updates. With KNX, this risk is practically non-existent because there are so many manufacturers that the collapse of one does not threaten the ecosystem.

In practice: KNX is like Android, open, flexible, with many options, but it requires more know-how and integration. Loxone is like an iPhone, closed, but everything works immediately and together.

Price: cost of startup and cost of expansion

Here are the figures that make sense for the Czech market in 2026. We calculate based on a 100 m² apartment with a standard smart home scope, lighting, shading, heating, security, and basic audio.

Loxone: initial budget estimate

KNX: initial budget estimate

KNX is initially 30-60% more expensive. This is not marketing; it results from costlier components (KNX is a "premium" category, with Basalte design buttons costing 4 000-8 000 Kč each), significantly higher hourly rates for integrators, and more time-consuming programming in ETS. On the other hand: a KNX installation can last 30+ years without replacement, whereas with Loxone over such a long horizon you will eventually need to replace the Miniserver and modules (assuming a 15-20 year lifespan).

A more detailed breakdown is available in the article about Loxone pricing for various apartment and house sizes in 2026.

Flexibility and scalability

Here KNX is clearly superior. As a bus-based standard, it allows you to combine hundreds of manufacturers in a single installation. Want a Gira thermostat with a display? No problem. A Basalte touch panel in walnut veneer for 15 000 Kč? Not an issue. Your own MDT KNX air quality sensor? It connects. This is not possible with Loxone, switches are only available as Loxone Touch (white or black, plastic), the Music Server is exclusively Loxone, and alarm integration is limited to selected partners.

Loxone partially addresses this through bridge functions. It can integrate Modbus, Sonos, Philips Hue, KNX, DALI, Homematic, Tesla Powerwall, PV inverter systems and a range of other standards. So even though the core is closed, you can connect anything to the edges. But if you want design touch panels or premium hi-fi bus audio, Loxone falls short.

If you are planning construction where you will add further modules over time (new heating zones, extension with a pool and sauna, integration with an advanced PV system), KNX offers greater headroom. If you know what you want and after 5 years will be satisfied with what you have, Loxone is the faster and cheaper route.

Service and availability of plumbers in the Czech Republic

The Czech market is small, and that makes a difference here. There are roughly 150-200 certified KNX integrator companies in the Czech Republic, of which perhaps only 30-40 are truly active in Prague and its surroundings. The problem is that most of them primarily handle large commercial projects (hotels, offices), and residential customers are not their top priority. The price for a service hour is 1 200-2 000 Kč, and the waiting time for an intervention often amounts to weeks.

There are around 80 Loxone partners (Silver, Gold, Platinum) in the Czech Republic, fewer than KNX, but they focus primarily on residential properties. Loxone also has a centralised remote service system: the partner connects via Loxone Cloud and resolves 80% of issues remotely without an on-site visit. The hourly rate for remote service is typically 800-1 200 Kč, while an on-site visit costs 1 200-1 800 Kč. Waiting times with active partners are 1-5 working days.

One more practical difference: with KNX, if the original integrator dies or leaves, taking over the project is complicated, each maintains their own ETS project file, and without it, a new company is blind. With Loxone, the project is stored in the Miniserver, so any certified partner can download it and continue. This makes service replacement less problematic.

When to choose Loxone and when KNX

Choose Loxone if:

Choose KNX if:

Hybrid: Loxone with KNX integration

A rarely mentioned option: the Loxone Miniserver can function as a KNX gateway. In practice, this means you handle the central logic and most routine tasks within Loxone, while integrating design-focused KNX buttons or specific KNX actuators as extensions. We have deployed this solution several times in our projects for customers who wanted design-oriented Basalte panels but preferred the rest of the system to be reasonably priced. The result: KNX aesthetics with Loxone logic and servicing.

Beware of KNX sellers "at any cost": If an integrator tells you that Loxone is a "toy" and KNX is the "only serious solution", it is usually just because they hold KNX certification but not Loxone certification. A quality installation is possible with both systems. Similarly, if someone claims that Loxone does everything. It doesn't. Design panels, advanced commercial BMS and certain specific scenarios are still led by KNX.

Conclusion and recommendations

In 2026, the choice between Loxone and KNX is less emotional than it was 10 years ago. Both systems are mature, both operate reliably, and both have available service in the Czech Republic. The difference lies primarily in budget, implementation speed, and design flexibility.

For 80% of residential customers in Prague and the surrounding area, Loxone makes more sense. It is cheaper, faster, more comprehensive, and service is more accessible. For 20% of customers (premium villas, commercial buildings, special design requirements), KNX still has a clear advantage.
