When customers in Prague choose Loxone, they usually know the basics. They can control lights, blinds and heating from their mobile phone. But few have a realistic idea of how far the system actually reaches and where its limits lie. Let's go through it systematically, category by category, with an emphasis on what is realistically available on the Czech market in 2026.

This article is deliberately critical, for each category we state not only what Loxone can do, but also where its weaknesses lie and when it is better to choose a specialised technology. No "Loxone can do absolutely everything". It cannot. But it can do more than most customers think.

1. Lighting: scenes, DALI, dimming, circadian

Lighting is the backbone of a smart home and Loxone offers a very strong range here. The system can control classic switched circuits (relays), dimmable circuits (phase-cut dimmers for 230V), 0-10V for industrial dimmers, DALI and DALI-2 for professional LED luminaires, RGB and RGBW strips, 1-10V for outdoor floodlights and Dimmer Extension for phase-cut dimmers.

Lighting scenes

Any number of scenes can be defined for each room - "Morning" turns on warmwhite LEDs at 30%, "Movie" dims the main lights to 10% and switches on indirect lighting, "Night" activates orientation LEDs at the foot of the bed. Scenes can be triggered from a switch, an app, by voice or automatically based on time, motion or sky conditions (ambient light).

DALI and professional LED

The Loxone DALI Extension supports up to 64 DALI-2 addresses on a single bus. In practice, this means that in a detached house with 40+ luminaires from Occhio, Vibia, Artemide, Luceplan or Czech manufacturers (Brokis, Lasvit, Bomma), you have full control via a single interface. DALI-2 additionally brings tunable white (adjustable chromaticity temperature from 2 700 K to 6 500 K) and circadian rhythm support.

Circadian lighting

Loxone natively supports circadian lighting: the light automatically adjusts its colour temperature according to the time of day. Cool 5 000 K in the morning for waking up, warm 2 200 K in the evening to prepare for sleep. Configuration is done in Loxone Config using a curve that mimics the natural course of daylight. In combination with DALI-2 luminaires, this is one of the most refined scenarios the system offers.

Lighting limits

Loxone does not natively support certain exotic protocols (Casambi, Bluetooth Mesh, Zigbee LED). If a client specifically requires Casambi luminaires, the solution must be implemented via a Casambi-to-KNX bridge or through an HTTP/REST interface. Similarly, specialised DMX control for cinema halls or architectural lighting requires integration with third-party solutions.

2. Shading: blinds, roller shutters, sun tracking

Motorised control of blinds and roller shutters is well implemented in the Loxone ecosystem. The system can control both 230V motors (Somfy, Becker, Nice) and Tree motors from Loxone, as well as other manufacturers via Modbus and KNX bridge. Each blind has parameters, lift time, rotation time, end positions, and the system can then do anything you can imagine.

Sun tracking

The greatest added value. Loxone knows the exact geographical location of the house (latitude, longitude) and can calculate the sun's position at any moment. It combines this with information on window orientation and automatically tilts the blind slats to an angle that lets light into the room but blocks direct sunlight. In combination with a sky sensor (Weather Station), it works excellently, in cloudy conditions the slats open, while in full sun they rotate to the optimal angle.

Automatic scenarios

Shading limits

Loxone does not elegantly handle fabric screen blinds with mechanical rollforming where very fine speed regulation is required. For Warema, Griesser and similar premium brands, their own control unit is typically supplied, which Loxone controls via relay or contact. This is therefore not a full integration.

3. Heating: zones, PID control, night setback

Loxone handles heating at the level of individual zones. Each room has a temperature sensor (or multiple sensors), based on which the system regulates heat supply: typically via an electric thermostat head on the underfloor heating manifold, a valve actuator for a radiator, or via a signal to an electric boiler/heat pump.

PID control

Unlike simple on/off thermostats, Loxone uses PID regulation with automatic adaptation to the building. The system "learns" how quickly a room heats up and cools down, and predicts when to start heating so that the desired temperature is reached at the required time. In practice: if you want 21 °C in the bathroom at 6:00, the system will start heating at 4:45 based on the measured thermal capacity.

Night setback and weekly schedule

In each zone you define different temperature regimes - Day (21 °C), Night (18 °C), Away (16 °C), Holiday (14 °C). Switching is done either manually, automatically according to a weekly schedule, or intelligently based on presence (GPS from mobile phone, door contact, motion in the room).

Integration with heat pumps and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery

Loxone can directly integrate a range of heat pumps (IVT, NIBE, Viessmann, Daikin via Modbus) and recuperation units (Zehnder, Atrea, Paul). In practice, this means you do not need a separate control unit for the heat pump and a separate smart home system, Loxone controls both from one location.

Heating limits

Loxone cannot replace the safety and emergency automation of a boiler or heat pump. Basic regulation (start/stop, heating water temperature, operating mode) yes, but safety circuits and emergency thermostats must be part of the boiler's standard electrical installation. Also, if you have a more complex system with an accumulation tank, a combination of solar collectors and a fireplace insert with a heat exchanger, investing in a specialised controller (Regulus, Tecomat Foxtrot) may make more sense.

4. Air conditioning: integration of A/C units

For controlling Loxone air conditioners, either an IR bridge is used (if the air conditioner has an IR remote control) or a Modbus/WiFi bridge from the manufacturer. In practice:

In practice, for detached houses with an air-to-water heat pump, passive cooling via underfloor heating with the heat pump in reverse mode is often used instead of air conditioning. Loxone controls this natively.

5. Audio: Loxone Music Server, multi-room, Spotify Connect

The Loxone Music Server is a central unit capable of handling up to 8 independent zones. Each zone connects to passive speakers (recessed ceiling, wall-mounted, waterproof for bathrooms, garden stones). Audio sources can include Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, DLNA, radio (internet or DAB+), a local library on a NAS, or a line input.

Multi-room scenarios

Audit limits

The Music Server is good, but it is not Hi-Fi. For audiophile scenarios involving vinyl, valve amplifiers and speakers costing 200 000 Kč, Loxone is not the first choice: a dedicated Hi-Fi system (Sonos, Naim, Lyngdorf) is required there, with Loxone handling only power and scenes. Likewise, for advanced home cinema (5.1.4 Atmos, Dolby Vision), Loxone is insufficient and an AV processor (Trinnov, Storm Audio) is needed.

6. Security: cameras, alarms, Loxone Intercom

Loxone Intercom

A doorbell with camera that integrates directly into the system. Guests are invited via the mobile app. You see who is ringing, hear them, open the door, and turn on the terrace light. Combined with GPS from your phone, the system detects when you are not at home and notifies you on your mobile.

Cameras

Loxone integrates IP cameras via RTSP stream. Supported brands include Hikvision, Dahua, Axis, Mobotix, as well as budget-friendly options like Reolink or Ubiquiti. Recording is handled by an NVR (Synology, QNAP, Reolink), Loxone is not an NVR; it only provides streaming and notifications.

Alarm

Loxone functions as a complete burglar alarm system (EZS). Connect motion sensors (Tree or wireless Air), window and door contacts, and indoor and outdoor sirens. Modes: away, partial (night, only external contacts), full, panic. On alarm: siren, lighting set to 100%, push notification, camera snapshot, optionally PCO.

Safety limits

Loxone as an alarm system is not certified to EN 50131 grade 2/3, if you require installation with connection to a central monitoring station (PCO) and certified security for insurance purposes, you must use a certified system (Jablotron, Paradox, DSC) and integrate Loxone only as a secondary layer. 7. Energy: PV systems, wallboxes, consumption optimisation

Energy is an area where Loxone has invested significantly over the past three years, and by 2026 it will be among the strongest residential systems on the market. It natively integrates:

Specific optimisation scenarios

8. Control: Touch, App, voice assistants

Loxone Touch switches

Touch capacitive switches with five zones (up, down, left, right, centre). Two colour options (white, black), two sizes (Touch, Touch Pure). Each zone responds to a short press, long press and double-click, theoretically up to 15 functions per switch. In practice, only 3-4 are used; any more you won't remember.

Mobile application

Loxone App for iOS and Android. View all rooms, control all functions, receive notifications. Remote access is via Loxone Cloud (encrypted tunnel) or your own VPN. The app supports home screen widgets, an Apple Watch application, and CarPlay integration.

Voice control

Loxone integrates:

In the Czech Republic, Siri via HomeKit is currently the most practical solution. It works reliably in English but poorly in Czech. Alexa does not work in Czech at all, while Google Assistant functions in the Czech Republic but with limited Czech support.

What Loxone cannot do well (realistic limitations)

Advanced home cinema

For cinema rooms with 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos, a Dolby Vision projector and image calibration, you need an AV processor (Trinnov, Storm Audio, Marantz AV10) and Lumagen for video. Loxone controls power and scenes, but it is not the "brain" of the cinema room.

Matrix video distribution

If you want to distribute a source (Apple TV, Blu-ray) to 6 TVs in the house via an HDBaseT matrix, Loxone does not handle this. You need a dedicated solution (Crestron, Control4, Savant, Just Add Power).

Hi-Fi audio of audiophile calibre

The Loxone Music Server is suitable up to the 'lifestyle multi-room' level (approximately Sonos quality). For audiophile quality (Lumin, Naim, dCS streamers, external DACs, valve amplifiers), Loxone is not suitable: the degree of compromise is unacceptable for demanding listeners.

Commercial BMS

For office buildings with 200+ zones, complex VRV air conditioning, CCTV and a complete access control system, Loxone is "small" and typically KNX, BACnet or Niagara Framework are selected. More details in the article. Loxone vs KNX.

Design-specific switches

If the architect insists on Basalte, Lithoss, JUNG LS Zero or Gira Esprit with leather finishes, Loxone Touch is available only in white/black plastic with a minimalist font, nothing more. The solution is KNX integration or third-party contacts via binary inputs.

Conclusion: When Loxone is sufficient and when it is not

For 85% of residential customers in Prague and the surrounding area, Loxone covers 100% of their requirements, lighting, shading, heating, audio, security, energy and complete control via a single application. The system is integrated, quick to implement and service is available at reasonable prices.

For the remaining 15% (audiophiles, film enthusiasts with dedicated home cinemas, highly design-demanding residences, commercial properties), Loxone as a 'hub' is excellent, but for specific scenarios it needs to be supplemented with specialised technologies, Trinnov for cinema, Basalte/KNX for design, Crestron for video matrix.
